Gynaecomastia

Who must have a gynecomastia surgery?

This surgical procedure can be performed on men, who experience a female-like growth of breast or excessive breast growth caused by weight gain.

The female-like growth of breast in men is called gynecomastia. The incidence of gynecomastia in our society covers almost half of the men population. This condition that psychologically disturbs men in social areas (sea, pool, beach, gym) is today a curable disorder. Gynecomastia is a condition that may appear due to hormonal disorders, alcohol use, long-term use of medicines that cause breast enlargement as side effects, steroid treatment, chronic diseases or tumors of certain internal organ (such as cirrhosis and liver cancer), malnutrition or some infections (AIDS); however, it can also appear without cause.

90% of this condition, which can be observed in 75% of men who have reached puberty, disappears by the end of puberty. In real terms, female-like growth of breast in men caused by weight gain is not a gynecomastia. However, treatment options can be evaluated under 3 main titles, in case of a real or pseudo gynecomastia. Three types of surgical options are used in the treatment of excessive breast size in men.

  • Fat removal—liposuction
  • Surgical removal of the breast tissue
  • Combined performance of liposuction and surgical procedure

Liposuction is a good and easy option for gynecomastia in less advanced cases. In advanced cases, the skin and breast tissue need to be surgically removed (with semilunar incision around the areola).
